Rev. Heather Ramsey Mabrouk Called to Serve as Program Coordinator for Together We Thrive Initiative

The Rev. Heather Ramsey Mabrouk has been called to serve as Program Coordinator for the Together We Thrive Initiative

In October 2018, the Massachusetts Conference of the United Church of Christ was awarded a $1 million grant for clergy development from Lilly Endowment Inc. The five year grant is being used in collaboration with the Connecticut and Rhode Island Conferences, the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts and the New England Synod - ELCA Lutheran.

The Together We Thrive proposal was submitted under the Massachusetts Conference name, but was developed cooperatively by a team of people from each of the organizations and is being used by them together.

The Rev. Ramsey Mabrouk has served churches in Marblehead, Beverly, and a suburb of Buffalo over the past 14 years.  In New York and Massachusetts, she has led workshops on Youth Ministry and Christian Education, planned and facilitated Conference-wide Confirmation Retreats, taught Boundary Awareness Training, created community-wide ecumenical worship opportunities, and given Interfaith presentations with her husband Nawfal, who is Sunni Muslim.

Strengthen the Church Offering to Benefit Children and Youth

In covenant with National UCC, and in solidarity with our Together, As One partners in Rhode Island and Connecticut who have made a similar determination, the Conference Board of Directors has approved a change in how the Strengthen the Church offering will be used within the Massachusetts Conference for 2019:

  • Strengthen the Church funds that remain in the Massachusetts Conference will be designated specifically for ministries with children and youth. This is in keeping with the high value of these ministries by all of the Together, As One partners, as well as our Conference’s reaffirmed commitment to a core area of mission that is faithful to Jesus’ call and essential to our future.
  • 50% of income from the offering up to $15,000 will be shared with National UCC.  Above this amount, there will be a 10% National–90% Conference split. This will ensure that National UCC receives funding at historic levels while additional Conference funding may be received.

Cherish the Earth!

By Barbara Darling, co-chair of the Environmental Ministries Task Team of the Massachusetts Conference

Earth Day is this month!  April 22 is the day set aside—for almost 50 years—to raise awareness of the fragility and vulnerability of our planet.

I recently attended a panel presentation on climate change.  One noteworthy PowerPoint slide showed that of the 13,950 peer-reviewed scientific articles on climate between 1991 and 2012, only 24 of them challenged the idea that climate change is real, and has been caused by human activity.  As the panelist pointed out, there isn’t scientific consensus that close to unanimous on any other issue, even gravity!

Human-caused climate disruption is already a catastrophe for many neighbor species with whom we share the planet—other creatures created lovingly by the God we worship.

Education Planning for the Whole Church

By Debbie Gline Allen, Associate for Faith Formation & Youth Ministry for the Massachusetts Conference

If we are unclear about what it is or what we are looking for in the process, the best we can hope for is to get where we are going part of the time by accident. I would suggest both our people and our God are entitled to expect more of us than that.”

- Charles F. Melchert

I have been blessed with the opportunity to share a process with local church leaders to assist them in creating an overall plan for faith formation for all ages in their congregations. This workshop is designed specifically for pastors, church educators, and Christian Education Committee chairpersons, but is open to anyone who is interested in meeting the spiritual needs of today’s children, families, youth, and adults. We are offering this opportunity one more time this program year on Saturday, May 4th at the Melrose Highlands Congregational Church from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Many Voices One Mission: Redefining Social Matter in America

By TJ Harper, Racial Justice Associate for the MA and CT Conferences, UCC.

When reading an article in National Geographic, I was amazed because a new phase of matter was discovered: “an unusual state of potassium” that is “solid and liquid at the same time.”  For years, in elementary school science classes, I learned that there were essentially three types of matter: solid, liquid, and gas (and later in college plasma also became part of the equation).  However, I had never heard of an intersection of any of the states of matter until now. For many years, I had a rather limited view on what it meant to be matter.

Moving beyond the science aspects of matter, what does it mean to matter in America? Why, in some contexts, is it taboo to say, “Black Lives Matter” or “Love Thy Muslim Neighbor”?  Is our societal view so myopic that people who do not conform to, or align with, social constructs cannot matter? What is the responsibility of people of faith to help redefine social matter in America?   These are questions that I wrestle with on a daily basis; questions that cannot remain unanswered.

Many Voices One Mission: Hope

By Charlie Kuchenbrod, Executive Associate Conference Minister for the Connecticut Conference, UCC

There is hope, yes there is. If we are faithful and courageous, we can live the love and justice of Jesus. Christ needs a new church. We can build it.

I see anxiety about declining membership and financial support growing at many of our congregations. For a long time, many churches were able to cope with declining membership because the remaining members increased giving, but now this inclination to generosity is weakening or is being overwhelmed by the loss of members. For many of us, it is becoming clear that the way we “do church” – which is facility-based, professionally-led, and Sunday-morning-worship-centered is no longer viable. This is real: If one of the functions of a church is to help people grow in their relationships with God, we are not functioning very well in many church settings. This may not be new. It may be that greater membership and financial support in the past was not a reflection of functioning well – helping people grow in their relationships with God - as much as evidence of the social role churches played in our culture.

SPOTLIGHT - Payson Park Seeking Visitors, Teens, and Refugees

After many decades of decline, Payson Park Church, UCC of Belmont, had to make a hard decision in 2015. The congregation brought in the CrossRoads / New Beginnings program, and actively consulted with Associate Conference Minister Wendy Vander Hart  to help answer the question about the church’s future.  Would the congregation now close, merge with another congregation, or rededicate themselves to a new mission and bring in another settled minister? Out of a time of discernment during a two year interim, the congregation decided to call a new pastor, and the Rev. Eric Wefald arrived at the end of 2016.

“Payson Park leaders actively engaged the process of looking into their neighborhood and discerning a new ‘Why’ for their ministry,” said Vander Hart.  “This work also greatly informed their search process for new pastoral leadership.”

Over the past two years, in 2017 and 2018, Payson Park Church has now welcomed fifteen new adult members, most of them young adults, which is a big number for a small congregation.
