Deeper Understandings Come from Worship Onboard Freedom Schooner Amistad

By Drew Page

On October 21, North Branford Congregational Church took a creative approach to worshipping beyond their walls. Members of the congregation traveled to New Haven to worship on the Freedom Schooner Amistad in New Haven Harbor.

The Freedom Schooner Amistad is a replica of a Baltimore Clipper-style schooner, based on La Amistad, the historic vessel made famous by the 1839 rebellion of African captives who took over the ship, and the trial that took place after the ship was recaptured in the Long Island Sound.

Many Voices One Mission: We Do Jesus Differently

By The Rev. Wendy Vander Hart, Associate Conference Minister for the MA Conference, UCC

Every day begins the same for me- weather permitting. I do a 3 or 4 mile walk which doubles as my prayer/reflection time. When I pay attention, sometimes I receive inspiration, even messages on my trek around the neighborhood. Like the person whose sweatshirt said “we do data.”

I never saw the front of the sweatshirt of that fellow walker, but it was clear what that company was about and what one could expect. O how I pray for such clarity for our churches and the redirection of energy it would free up in our congregations!

Starting With Scripture: The Power of Words

By The Rev. Kate VanDerzee-Glidden, pastor of First Church of Christ Congregational of Glastonbury, CT

When I was a child, I would get anxious about things beyond my control like if a family member was sick or how we were going to solve the world’s problems of hunger, the destruction of the environment, hatred and inequality. One time when I was visiting my Grandma at her house on Long Island, she shared a poem with me. My Grandma loved poetry – writing it and memorizing it. She found comfort and inspiration in the words and images.
