211th Autumnal Meeting Draws 150

PROVIDENCE - Nearly 150 representatives from 23 churches across the Rhode Island Conference turned out for the 211th Autumnal Meeting on Nov. 4, where they heard from a Lancaster Theological School professor, experienced worship and communion in the stunning neo-Renaissance sanctuary of Central Congregational Church, networked with colleagues from other churches and organizations and heard reports on Conference ministry.

And although there was much joy in being together and reasons to celebrate, there was also the sobering reality of the budgetary issues that the Conference faces.

Small in Number; Big in Generosity

Buckets were collected at
Newman Congregational Church

The Rhode Island Conference may not be large in terms of the number of churches it comprises, but there is nothing small about its level of generosity.

In response to the series of hurricanes and natural disasters this season, the Conference's churches collected 205 clean up buckets and 102 hygiene kits for Church World Service, and donated $6,849 for disaster relief, including $1,249 taken in during the offering at the Autumnal Meeting on Nov. 4th.

Also at the Autumnal Meeting, delegates brought 2,556 pounds of books and 26 pounds of clothing for an Irons Homestead fundraiser. Those items will be turned into cash to offset the cost of recent improvements to the retreat center.

Conference Ministers: “How Long O Lord?”

An excerpt from a letter by Barbara Libby, Kent Siladi and Jim Antal:

As leaders of our three Conferences we do not have easy answers or quick solutions.  We feel the same frustration and anger that the cycle of violence in our country seems to never end.  We do believe that the purpose for which we are joined together is to make this world more just, more loving and more compassionate.  We do believe that our purpose is to love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength and to love our neighbors as ourselves.  We embrace the vision of the United Church of Christ that says, “United in Christ’s love, a just world for all.”
