Education and Training Programs for Racial Justice Offered

This summer’s protest in Charlottesville, Virginia, by Neo-Nazi, KKK, and other white supremacist groups is a sober reminder that racism is a systemic problem that all Americans need to address. That day in August, along with recent deadly encounters between law enforcement and black men, is a sign that the sin of slavery and racism are still deeply embedded in our national psyche. As a people who embrace Christ’s love as a covenant between us, it is essential that we engage in the work of self-education about the harm that racism does within ourselves, our congregations, and our denomination.

The Rhode Island Conference would like you and your congregations to know about the Racial Justice Ministry, which makes trainers available to lead programs about Sacred Conversations on Race and the Realms of Racism.

Vandalism mars rainbow doors at Cranston church

Intended as a symbol of inclusiveness, the multicolored doors on display at Woodridge Congregational United Church of Christ were damaged before Sunday’s service, but the church’s pastor said the incident offers a chance to explore the concept of forgiveness.

The doors belong to the Newman Congregational Church in Rumford, which designed them to replicate those first created by the Westfield Congregational Church in Danielson, CT.  Newman has loaned them out to other Rhode Island Conference Churches - Amicable Congregational in Tiverton, Chapel Street Congregational in Lincoln and Seekonk Congregational - but this is the first time they have been vandalized.
